Inspiration
Numbers are the foundation of many aspects of our daily lives, from banking to scientific research. Recognizing handwritten digits accurately is crucial in various fields, including postal services, banking check verification, and digitizing historical documents. Inspired by the power of AI and deep learning, we aimed to build a system capable of recognizing handwritten digits with high accuracy.
What it does
Our Handwritten Digit Recognition model takes an image of a handwritten digit (0-9) and predicts the corresponding number using deep learning techniques. It processes the input image, extracts relevant features, and classifies it into one of the ten digit categories.
How we built it
We built the model using: Dataset: MNIST, a widely used dataset of handwritten digits. Frameworks: TensorFlow/Keras for training deep learning models. Model Architecture: Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract spatial features from the images. Training: The model was trained on labeled MNIST images, optimizing it for high accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
Fine-tuning the CNN architecture for better accuracy. Managing overfitting during training. Optimizing inference speed for real-time digit recognition. Deploying the model in a lightweight and accessible format. Accomplishments that we're proud of Achieving high accuracy on the MNIST test set. Successfully implementing a real-time digit prediction system. Enhancing model performance while keeping it efficient.
What we learned
The importance of data preprocessing for improving model accuracy. Different techniques to optimize CNN models for better performance. Deploying AI models in an interactive and user-friendly way.
What's next for Handwritten Digit Recognition
Expanding support for different handwriting styles and datasets. Improving model efficiency for mobile and embedded systems. Extending the system to recognize handwritten text beyond single digits.
