Inspiration

Typing speed tests are everywhere. They’re quick, addictive, and easy to measure. But handwriting—something we’re doing less and less of—has no equivalent. There’s no leaderboard, no challenge, no moment of shared effort across people who still value pen and paper.

The Handwriting Speed Challenge is our answer to that. A space where people can test how fast (and accurately) they can write by hand, just like they would in a typing test—but with real ink and effort. It’s about celebrating a skill we’re slowly forgetting.

What it does

Each day, the app generates a new short phrase using OpenAI. Users copy the phrase by hand, upload a photo of their handwriting, and get ranked on a global leaderboard based on their speed and accuracy. The leaderboard resets daily, encouraging repeat participation and a fresh challenge for everyone.

How we built it

We built the app in one shot using Bolt.new.

  • OpenAI GPT-3.5 is used to dynamically generate the daily challenge phrase.
  • OpenAI GPT-4o Vision API processes uploaded images to extract the handwritten text.
  • Supabase stores user submissions and maintains the daily leaderboard.
  • The frontend is clean, fast, and designed for mobile—letting users compete from anywhere.

Challenges we ran into

The only hiccup we faced was that Bolt currently treats "GPT Vision Preview" as the latest vision model, whereas OpenAI’s official documentation has updated to recommend GPT-4o for image understanding. We worked around it, but it's something future builders should watch for.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We turned a quirky idea into a functional, working product within a single one-shot prompt.
  • We used real image understanding (not mock logic) to evaluate handwriting.
  • We brought together creativity, speed, and a tangible human skill into one experience.

What we learned

Bolt is incredibly capable of building apps in one shot. The quality, speed, and coherence of what it generated was genuinely surprising. This is the kind of app we wouldn’t have imagined building so quickly until now.

What's next for Handwriting Speed Analyzer – One Shot Challenge

Next up: marketing. We want to see if there’s a real community of people who are excited to test, compare, and track their handwriting speed. We’re exploring ways to share leaderboards, promote daily challenges, and maybe even build streaks or regional competitions.
