Inspiration

What if a simple gesture could create a genuine emotional connection with a virtual creature?

This question has guided our creative journey since 2022, when we developed Crystal Bond, an award-winning student VR project nominated at Laval Virtual 2023.

Crystal Bond was our first exploration of natural hand interactions and emotional connections with an autonomous virtual creature. It allowed us to experiment with a different approach to VR, where the player's hands become more than just controllers: they become a genuine means of communication.

You can even try Crystal Bond yourself! The original experience is available for free on itch.io, offering a glimpse into the foundations that inspired A Handsome Journey (see "Try it out" links).

Building on these foundations, we created A Handsome Journey, a much more ambitious cozy VR puzzle adventure centered around trust, exploration, and emotional storytelling.

We wanted to create a world where kindness, patience, and curiosity are just as important as solving puzzles.

What it does

In A Handsome Journey, players embody a guiding spirit seeking redemption in a fading bioluminescent world.

Their journey begins with Kaïa, a tiny, fearful creature who no longer trusts them.

Using only their hands, players solve environmental puzzles, protect Kaïa, and gradually rebuild their relationship through gestures and actions.

But Kaïa is not simply a companion following scripted instructions. She is an autonomous creature with her own behaviors, emotions, and reactions.

Trust is at the heart of the gameplay. As the relationship evolves, Kaïa becomes more comfortable around the player, unlocking original proximity-based interactions that transform how they cooperate and explore the environment.

Players can gradually get closer to her, guide her with their fingers, or even offer their hands as platforms.

The adventure unfolds across immersive 360° diorama-like environments, encouraging players to observe, explore, and interact with a living world surrounding them.

Together, they must rekindle the light of a world slowly fading away.

How we built it

A Handsome Journey is developed in Unity, using XR Hands, hand tracking, and custom interaction systems designed for standalone VR.

Our approach focuses on several interconnected systems:

  • Natural hand interactions: Intuitive gestures allow players to manipulate the world directly, without controllers.
  • Proximity-based mechanics: Interactions rely on the distance between the player's hands, Kaïa, and the environment, creating new ways to cooperate.
  • Autonomous creature behavior: Kaïa uses a behavior tree to navigate, explore, and react independently.
  • Dynamic trust system: The player's actions influence Kaïa's reactions and willingness to interact, progressively unlocking new possibilities.
  • 360° environmental puzzles: Players interact with their surroundings from a stationary position, discovering new perspectives and solutions.
  • Diegetic experience design: Gameplay information, feedback, and storytelling are integrated naturally into the world rather than relying on conventional interfaces.

Challenges we ran into

Making hand tracking intuitive and comfortable

One of our biggest challenges has been designing natural interactions that remain comfortable for different players.

In a 360° environment, the height and depth of interactions can significantly affect accessibility and physical comfort, especially when switching between seated and standing play.

To address this, we developed custom internal placement tools that help us visualize and define comfortable interaction zones according to their height and distance from the player.

These tools allow us to design and adjust our environments while keeping ergonomics at the center of the experience.

Communicating without words

Another major challenge has been creating a fully understandable experience through non-verbal communication.

We want players to understand Kaïa's emotions, intentions, and needs without relying on dialogue, explicit instructions, or text-heavy interfaces.

This requires careful attention to her animations, sounds, body language, and reactions to the player's behavior.

Our goal is to make players naturally recognize when Kaïa is afraid, curious, hesitant, or ready to trust them.

We also strive to keep the experience as diegetic as possible, allowing the environment and its inhabitants to communicate essential information directly.

Balancing autonomy and cooperation

Kaïa must feel like a living creature rather than a character controlled by the player.

Finding the right balance between her autonomy, the player's freedom, and the clarity of puzzle-solving has been an ongoing design challenge.

Her reactions need to be understandable without becoming overly predictable, making each interaction feel natural and meaningful.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our journey started with a simple idea: creating an emotional bond through natural interactions in VR.

What began as a student experiment has gradually evolved into an ambitious original game developed by our independent studio, HandScape.

Some milestones we're particularly proud of:

  • Crystal Bond, our first hand-tracking experience, received multiple awards and was nominated at Laval Virtual 2023.
  • Our concept evolved into A Handsome Journey, expanding its foundations with deeper creature behaviors, original proximity-based mechanics, and a richer narrative world.
  • In December 2024, the project received support from the French National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) through its video game writing grant.
  • We have presented and demonstrated our experiences at several gaming and XR events, gathering valuable feedback from both players and industry professionals.
  • In 2026, we officially founded HandScape, our independent studio dedicated to creating emotional, sensory, and accessible interactive experiences.

But beyond awards and milestones, one of our proudest achievements is seeing players genuinely connect with Kaïa, often through simple gestures that require no explanation.

It's these moments that remind us why we started this journey.

What we learned

Developing Crystal Bond and now A Handsome Journey has reinforced our belief that meaningful interactions don't need to be complex to create strong emotions.

Sometimes, the smallest gesture can communicate more than a thousand words.

We've learned how essential accessibility and physical comfort are when designing hand-tracking experiences. Natural interactions are only truly intuitive when they account for the diversity of players and how they move.

Above all, we've discovered how powerful non-verbal storytelling can be when the player's actions directly influence their relationship with a virtual character.

What's next for Handsome Journey

Our journey is far from over!

We are continuing to expand A Handsome Journey with new environmental puzzles, proximity-based interactions, and deeper emotional behaviors for Kaïa.

Our next steps focus on refining the player experience, gathering feedback through playtesting, and bringing our bioluminescent world to life across more environments.

Our ambition is to create an accessible, sensory, and wholesome VR adventure that invites players to slow down, explore, and build a meaningful connection with a living virtual world.

Because sometimes, all it takes to rebuild trust is reaching out a hand.
