Inspiration

An Instagram poll asking Yalies about laundry complaints revealed the biggest issue is etiquette. People yank others' wet clothes out and dump them anywhere, and no one ever knows where their laundry ends up.

What it does

QR codes on each machine open a page where you log a load in, or remove one — yours or someone else's, moved to a wall-mounted cubby. A "Find My Laundry" lookup by NetID shows where your clothes currently are. Dryers also show how long ago a load finished, as a courtesy nudge before removal.

How we built it

User research → paper sketches → Figma mockups → a Next.js web app (not native, for zero-install QR scanning), with dynamic routes handling every machine across every college. v0 uses sample data instead of a live backend for a fast reliable demo.

Challenges we ran into

I had to cut SMS/email notifications and accounts in favor of a live NetID lookup, and adjust my design based on real user behavior in the laundry room.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A fully working, deployed click-through demo!! And being able to test it out in the laundry room.

What we learned

I learned how to identify the core components of a project idea and simplify it down! Less and better components is better than a ton.

What's next for Handsome Dan's Hamper

A real backend, email notifications, NetID-based identity verification.
