Inspiration

Modern education relies heavily on the use of screens. As much as we’d hate to admit it, electronic devices are how we’ve learned to learn. Having a screen addiction can stray us away from the real world. From creativity, passion, and innovation. Luckily, we’ve developed a technology that doesn’t require learning to be electronic. We’re using a Hybrid model of the future and traditional methods of studying. One that uses AI-powered technology, but also one that prevents our addiction to screens. With StudyMate, we aim to solve this addiction by creating efficient technology to minimize screen time and maximize learning.

What it does

StudyMate offers a variety of features, including instructional education tools, algorithmic question generation, and voice recognition authentication. By integrating OpenAI and Convex APIs, StudyMate becomes an interactive learning experience. Users can directly learn and practice material provided by the study assistant. But how do we accomplish this without the use of any electronic display? We combine our software with an Arduino Uno that has LED lights and a built-in Bluetooth speaker. By validating user responses, a corresponding LED light flashes, followed by StudyMate’s constructive advice. We can assure you that StudyMate won’t give up on you. The more you need, the more you’ll receive from our AI Assistant!

How we built it

The development stage of StudyMate consisted of three major components; planning, hardware, and software. The first few hours of our time as a team were spent on determining what features StudyMate should have. Honestly speaking, we tried to implement the most complicated concept for uniqueness. Once we realized this was not a positive business incentive, we targeted our focus to what features would benefit students the most. After collectively answering this question and unanimously deciding upon an AI-powered study assistant, we began splitting the workload. We alternated between developing the software and building the hardware and eventually, we began making progress. The hardware was relatively simple at its core, involving an Arduino Uno and a combination of LEDs. StudyMate relies upon communication between the backend and the Arduino, where the backend would utilize a combination of APIs to communicate with the user. The creation of StudyMate would not have been possible without the use of key APIs like Convex and Voiceflow.

Challenges we ran into

Innovation is abstract without challenges. New technology is bound to have problems. Here at HandsOff Technologies, we see them coming and overcome our obstacles. Throughout the early development of StudyMate, we had difficulties with the LED lights. The circuits were often incorrect in identifying response validity. We individually tested each hardware component, communicated with each other, and fixed these issues within an hour of time. However, we would continue to face obstacles during the debugging period of StudyMate. One of the longer issues was connecting the Arduino Uno to the backend of our product. Nonetheless, we worked tirelessly to make StudyMate a success.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

StudyMate isn’t the future. It’s not the present. It’s definitely not the past. StudyMate is a timeline of innovation. We’re proud of developing a product that is beneficial for the user’s health and well-being. Our usage of the Convex API was entirely new. There was no prior experience in this area of knowledge, but we researched and made it possible. We’re certain that we could’ve saved some time, had we used StudyMate to learn instead. In entrepreneurship and innovation, our customers always come first. We are definitely satisfied with the UI of our product, but let’s not forget about the combination of software and hardware. As emerging leaders of the 21st century, we are proud of brainstorming, planning, designing, and implementing StudyMate. We are most proud of aligning our tangible and intangible goals to create our product!

What we learned

Over the 36 hours of developing StudyMate, we learned more than we ever thought was possible. We gained unparalleled knowledge in areas like Arduino, AI/Python, and APIs. More specifically, we dived into concepts like Pyserial and utilizing this Python library to communicate between Arduino Syntax and Python. We learned the importance of communication, teamwork, and assigning tasks. We appointed a team leader to plan the project while considering time constraints. This helped us achieve each specific goal efficiently. Learning is not restricted to hacking. What we learned at Hack The North 2024 will be useful for the rest of our lives!

What's next for HandsOff Technologies

In the upcoming future, we see ourselves with a deep product chain. By targeting our products to university students or elementary learners, StudyMate can assist the world, one demographic at a time. Other than the “Who” factor, we want to omit the usage of wires and implement a completely wireless operating system. With built-in Bluetooth speakers and seamless integration, StudyMate will be convenient at any time, anywhere. We’re excited to see what the future holds!
