Inspiration

A package can arrive at the right physical address and still be left in the wrong place. For commercial clinics, law offices, co-working spaces, and apartment communities, couriers frequently drop sensitive boxes on open sidewalks, near rain-exposed eaves, or unattended outside business hours without notifying anyone.

We built Handoff to close the critical, vulnerable "last ten feet" between a driver's porch drop-off and internal custodial intake by front-desk personnel.

What it does

Handoff acts as an intelligent delivery sentry powered by Ring Doorbell Pro feeds:

  1. Automated Intake & Telemetry: Intercepts carrier delivery events (FedEx, Amazon, UPS) and anchors high-definition intake frames with bounding box detection.
  2. Real-Time Dwell Sentry: Tracks live dwell duration second-by-second on the porch. If unattended parcels exceed a 15-minute SLA threshold, the system triggers an amber/red "Needs Attention" alert to ensure urgent retrieval.
  3. Custodial Chain Confirmation: Front desk staff confirms retrieval with a single click, immutably logging staff identity and custody timestamps.
  4. Legal Evidence Dossier: Generates an immutable, printable evidence dossier stamped with a cryptographic SHA-256 audit digest—proving exact placement, condition, and custody transition for disputes or insurance claims.

How we built it

  • Ring Developer Platform: Leveraged Ring API video snapshots, WebRTC live streams, and device events through custom Windows-compatible CA certificate injection layers.
  • Next.js 15 & React: Crafted a resilient cyber-bento dashboard with real-time state synchronization, live dwell countdowns, and dynamic ticket management.
  • Cryptographic Evidence Engine: Engineered an automated SHA-256 digest hashing algorithm that compiles carrier metadata, placement zone, intake timestamps, and intake notes into a tamper-evident audit dossier.
  • AWS Bedrock Runtime Integration: Architecture prepared for multi-modal computer vision parsing of box condition upon arrival.

Challenges we ran into & Friction Log

We documented a strict 6-field rubric friction log in docs/FRICTION_LOG.md in our repository, detailing:

  • Short-lived 30-minute Playground access tokens that silently drop WebRTC stream pipelines without proactive renewal events.
  • Node.js Windows environments rejecting Amazon Vision intermediate SSL certificates, which required building a system-store proxy layer (fetchWithSystemCA).
  • Reconciling sub-second UI dwell tickers with asynchronous cloud webhook deliveries.

What we learned

We discovered that the hardest problem in commercial deliveries isn't GPS tracking to the doorstep—it is the unverified gap between the doorstep and the person legally responsible for taking possession. Building on Ring demonstrated how ambient hardware can transition from simple home security into an enterprise custody protocol.
