Inspiration

Agent-to-agent handoffs often assert that a task is complete even when a required file is missing, a cited commit doesn't contain the change, or blockers are still open. Handoff Check turns selected handoff claims into checks against local evidence.

What it does

Handoff Check is an offline Python CLI that checks explicit FILE: and COMMIT: claims against filesystem and Git evidence. It detects COMPLETE: claims contradicted by open tasks or blockers, and reports verified, contradicted or unverifiable findings with source line numbers. Reported test results remain unverifiable; commands in handoffs are never executed.

Developers who transfer work across coding agents, machines or sessions and want an auditable starting point instead of relying on confident but unverified summaries.

How it was built

The official Devpost Learn Skill Pack was installed and consulted to create planning documents (devpost/scope.md, devpost/prd.md, devpost/spec.md, devpost/checklist.md). The participant challenged the original checklist-parser direction and authorized a pivot toward verifying concrete evidence. An AI coding agent implemented the verifier and automated tests. The initial full flipped-interaction interview was not completed; the planning history remains in the public repository.

Demo and tests

The 98-second demo runs the actual CLI against a temporary Git repository. First it detects missing evidence and returns exit code 1; then a correction produces verified results and exit code 0. All 12 Python automated tests pass. The demo, source code and instructions are publicly available.

Lessons and limits

A file's existence is not proof of correctness, a commit is not deployment, and the absence of a contradiction is not proof that all work is complete. This tool deliberately uses an explicit claim language instead of pretending to understand arbitrary prose.
