Inspiration

Growing up in a small town in Oregon, I saw local artisans struggle to reach beyond our community—their incredible handcrafted pieces deserved a global stage. I wanted to build something that centered their stories, not just their products, and made it easy for shoppers (like my family in France and friends in New York) to find meaningful, unique goods over mass-produced items.

What it does

Handmade Marketplace is a home for independent creators and conscious buyers. It lets shoppers browse curated handmade goods, filter by style/price/customizability, connect directly with artisans, and request custom orders—all while honoring the craft and narrative behind each piece.

How we built it

I started with mapping user flows (buyer browsing, artisan communication, custom order workflows) in Figma, aligning with warm, earthy visual guidelines. I built the frontend with React and Tailwind CSS, prioritizing responsive design for desktop/tablet/mobile. I focused on intuitive filtering logic and sequential custom order status tracking to keep the experience seamless.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was designing the custom order workflow—ensuring status progression (Pending → Design → Production → Review → Shipped) was intuitive, and sample approval/revision actions updated status correctly without friction. I also struggled to balance visual warmth with clean, functional UI (e.g., product grids vs. whitespace).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a platform that centers artisans’ stories first, not just sales. The responsive design works flawlessly across devices, and the filter system lets shoppers find exactly what they’re looking for—whether it’s a vintage jewelry piece or a custom home decor item.

What we learned

I learned that e-commerce success isn’t just about transactions—it’s about connection. Prioritizing user stories (both buyer and artisan) over feature bloat made the platform more meaningful. I also deepened my skills in React state management for dynamic workflows like custom orders.

What's next for this project

We plan to add artisan dashboards for listing management, integrate real-time notifications for order status, and expand regional craft showcases (focusing on European and North American creators first). We also want to build a review system that highlights craft quality, not just product satisfaction.
