Inspiration
We were inspired by a recipient who is missing their lower arm below the elbow and requires a device to assist their ability to hold the handles of a bike or scooter.
What it does
The design allows for individuals who have elbow function but lack their lower arm to safely ride and operate a bike or scooter. It provides stability while riding by allowing the user to have control of the bike with both arms, not just their intact arm. It is also safe by allowing the user to easily detach themselves from the vehicle in case of a crash.
How we built it
We researched previous solutions to similar problems and sought for a creative way to attach to the handlebars. Lifting straps and how they reduce the demand for grip strength inspired us, along with slap bracelets and the delight they can bring to younger audiences. We wanted to prioritize stability in our design so we created a harness that would secure the device to the body and take some tension off of the limb itself. Our design ensures that the wearer still has the needed range of motion for biking or riding a scooter while providing more comfort and stability.
Challenges we ran into
We found struggles in ensuring comfort and support for the user while still maintaining its functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to make the design fun and affordable.
What we learned
We learned how to communicate and work as a team.
What's next for Handle Holder
The next step is to make sure it fits correctly and is secure enough to allow for extreme control.
