Inspiration
Our project was inspired by our friends who are disabled, and we realized how difficult it can be to move around Pitt’s campus. Emergency preparedness is also a major concern, since sometimes the only way to exit a building requires a long and complicated detour. By creating a way to rate buildings, we hope to bring awareness to accessibility issues while also helping students plan safer and easier routes.
What it does
This site is a spin on the Rate My Professors app. Here, users may rate buildings and review accessibilities features such as ramps, fire safety routes, elevator wait times, and much more! The site will also provide a map to show the most accessible routes, helping students avoid problem areas and get to class more efficiently.
How we built it
Our frontend work was built using CSS and HTML, while the backend work was built using JavaScript and MySQL. Our SQL server host is Aiven, and our web host is Vercel.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was building an entire database for the first time, and another challenge was figuring out how to use Leaflet.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to come together as a group and create something! We split the work most efficiently and it resulted in us being able to sleep peacefully during this hackathon.
What we learned
We learned that Pitt buildings are more inaccessible than we first thought and that student feedback is incredibly important in topics like these.
What's next for HandiMapped
The next steps for our website would be to ensure that all Pitt buildings are rated and have emergency plans available for students to see. We may also expand and create an app since it would be more convenient for users.
