Inspiration

Our inspiration came when we found out that there was an application that translates words into sign language called Signapse. We realized that there was no application that helps people translate sign language into words and that led to our current project.

What it does

Hand SignAI translates sign language in real time from the video taken by the user at the target.

How we built it

We created the concept on Google Slides and edited the videos of how the interface would look like, but in the future we want to use Android Studio to make the app and integrate the AI component.

Challenges we ran into

The challenge that we ran into was editing the video to the potential interface, but we were able to overcome it. When we actually create the project, I think the potential challenges that we will face is getting AI to recognize hand placement, and lighting errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were proud of our execution of our plan despite it only being a concept. We're also really satisfied with our idea as be believe that our project will help a lot of people with our target audience being both deaf and non deaf people.

What we learned

We learned about the challenges facing deaf people. We weren't that aware of the communication issues that would occur between them and non deaf people. We also didn't know about the English to sign language AI until we did research and learned about different AI technology. It has encouraged us to look more into AI technology.

What's next for Hand SignAl

After this jumpstart with the concept that we created, we plan to continue our project and actually make it into a free app that can be used by anyone.
