Inspiration

One of our team members worked in a large food retailer and, every night, a primary job was to dispose of almost 1/4 of the location's baked goods that were nearing expiration or were "day-old". This large amount of perfectly edible food was being tossed in the garbage, not going to any hungry Angelinos, and adding a considerable volume to the location's overall waste.

What it does

Our solution, Hand in Hand, aims to solve Los Angeles's issue of food insecurity and reduce business/city waste by equipping local businesses with an application that connects them to Angelinos in need.

How we built it

Our team built Hand In Hand using the .Net Framework, Javascript, JQuery, and Angularjs. We used Microsoft SQL Server to handle database requirements. Our team also leveraged Google's Maps API and Amazon Web Services.

Challenges we ran into

A primary challenge we ran into was creating incentives for businesses to participate in the Hand In Hand project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that our team were able to come up with a possible working solution to a very real problem. Hand In Hand would positively impact the everyday lives of many Angelinos, and we are proud of its great potential.

What we learned

We learned that food insecurity in Los Angeles exists and that Angelinos need help!

What's next for Hand In Hand

Hand In Hand aims to become a Mimimum Viable Product that can be further developed to extend it's functionality and service offerings.
