Inspiration

The idea for the Hand Cricket app came from nostalgic childhood memories of playing hand cricket with friends during school breaks. It was a simple yet thrilling game where we used hand gestures to mimic cricket matches, competing for the highest score. I wanted to recreate this fun experience in a digital format, allowing players to enjoy the game on their phones and share their scores with a community on Reddit, bringing back that sense of friendly competition.

What it does

Hand Cricket is a mobile app that lets players enjoy the classic hand cricket game, where you use numbers (1 to 6) to score runs or take wickets against an AI opponent. The app features a vibrant interface, real-time score tracking and allowing users to post their high scores directly to a dedicated subreddit. Players can compete for leaderboard rankings and engage with others by sharing tips and game highlights.

How I built it

I built the app using basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ensuring it works seamlessly with a responsive design for every screen. It has a computer mode currently where users can choose that and play against a computer since I am yet to add online matchmaking system after which users can directly face each other on reddit & compete and have fun playing with their friends.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was to use Reddit's Devvit because I am a beginner in web dev & I have very limited knowledge about it but yet I managed to tackle it. Another hurdle was ensuring the app’s performance across low-end devices, which I tackled by optimizing animations and reducing memory usage.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of creating a polished, user-friendly app that captures the essence of hand cricket while adding modern features like social sharing. The app’s smooth performance across devices and the positive feedback from a few testers, who loved the nostalgic feel, are the achievements I cherish.

What we learned

Building Hand Cricket taught me how to work with Advanced Javascript & develop responsive design for a uninterrupted and clean UI for users engaging with it. I also learned the importance of user feedback in refining the game’s interface and balancing gameplay to keep it engaging yet simple.

What's next for Hand Cricket

Next, I plan to add multiplayer mode, allowing friends to compete in real-time. I am also exploring new features like customizable avatars and in-game challenges to boost engagement. Improving the AI opponent to adapt to player skill levels is another goal. Additionally, I aim to expand social features, such as in-app leaderboards and Reddit-based tournaments, to grow the Hand Cricket community.
