The inspiration for Hand Companion came from observing the daily communication challenges faced by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. We realized that while sign language is a powerful medium of communication, not everyone understands it. This gap inspired us to create a tool that would make interactions seamless for everyone, regardless of their hearing abilities.
Hand Companion is an AI-powered tool that translates real-time sign language gestures into spoken words. It serves as a bridge between those who communicate through sign language and those who don't, ensuring that everyone can understand and be understood.
We utilized Python, Fetch and integrated it with a deep learning model trained on thousands of sign language gestures. Then connected it with our front-end which we used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript The system was then optimized for real-time performance, ensuring quick and accurate translations.
Training the AI model to recognize a vast array of gestures with high accuracy was a significant challenge. Additionally, ensuring that the system worked seamlessly in various lighting conditions and with different hand sizes and shapes required iterative testing and refinement. Finally, to correctly utilize GitHub.
Achieving a high accuracy rate in gesture recognition, text-to-speech, and transcribing what was being captured. We know our effort has helped the deaf community, and that has been our proudest accomplishment. Knowing that Hand Companion is making a real difference in people's lives is immensely gratifying.
Beyond the technical aspects, we learned about the rich culture and history of sign language and the deaf community. We also realized the importance of inclusivity in technology and how even a small tool can have a significant impact on bridging communication gaps.
We plan to expand the gesture database to include regional sign language variations. Additionally, we're working on integrating voice output, so the translated words can be spoken out loud, further aiding communication. We also envision a mobile app version to make Hand Companion accessible anytime, anywhere.
