Inspiration
Recovering from surgery is an essential part of any medical procedure. However, it can be difficult for patients to keep track of what they must do—or avoid—before and after surgery. This challenge becomes even greater when there is a language barrier, for example when a patient speaks Quechua and their doctor speaks Spanish.
What it does
Hampy Nanay helps patients track pre- and post-operative activities while providing clear guidance on what actions are required, what must not be ignored, who to contact in case of an emergency, and how to properly manage their medication intake.
How we built it
We held meetings with our medical team to identify weaknesses in the healthcare system. We found that even when a surgical procedure itself is successful, proper care before and after surgery is equally critical. This is especially true for older patients or those who speak Quechua.
To address this, we designed a mobile application, as not everyone has access to a PC. We also focused on accessibility, including text-to-speech support for patients with visual or reading difficulties, since elderly patients are one of our primary target groups.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing Quechua text-to-speech was particularly challenging due to the lack of validated models and the absence of technical and medical vocabulary support. As a result, a fully reliable TTS solution is still difficult to achieve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have built Hampy Nanay as a bridge between patients and doctors, supporting both pre-operative and post-operative care and helping ensure that patients are not left alone during recovery.
What we learned
We learned about the real difficulties patients face during surgical recovery and the importance of Quechua in healthcare access. User limitations must be considered, as gaps in healthcare systems can prevent patients from fully understanding medical instructions that are critical to their recovery.
What’s next for Hampy Nanay
Next, we plan to implement a reliable Quechua TTS system, expand support to additional medical procedures, and add features that allow patients to write notes or take photos to better track their recovery.
