Inspiration
We knew that we wanted to encoporate something that we had learned at university, seeing as we have experience in both front end and back end developement we wanted to show off some of the skills we had learned. Since it is spooky season we decided that we wanted to make a little fun game encoporating a web framework and a remote database.
What it does
The website, Ghoul Game, gives the user a condition of either increasing their counter or ending their streak with the objective of getting the highest score possible. The ghoul can randomly jump out at any increment of the counter and the objective is to get as far as possible along the counter without having the ghoul jump out and end your streak.
How we built it
We kept it plain and simple with Django, PostgresSQL, Javascript, and of course HTML and CSS. After many hours and several Google tabs we finished our project.
Challenges we ran into
As new Hackers, the first major challange we ran into was deciding on which platform we wanted to use for our data. There are many great platforms for software development. We first looked at using Google Cloud. However, we came to argee that it was a little above our heads for our skill level. Next, we looked at CockroachDB, but ultimately decided on Heroku PostgreSQL. The second major challenge we faced was bug fixing and error handling. Since we were working with a remote database and a web framework, there was many bugs we had to fix in order to view and interact with the website. One bug we could not fix unfortunately was saving to our database. The database would have showcased player's scores for everyone to see.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of many things this Hackathon. Since this is our first hackaton, we are proud to have made a tangible product in the time-span given. We worked with unfamiliar systems, platforms, and learned more about them. We are also proud to have met many friendly hackers during the event.
What we learned
The immediate thing we learned was that it is very challenging to come up with ideas and implement them quickly. Besides the challenge, we got to learn about many great companies, products, and services throughout the event.
What's next for Ghoul Game
We hope to fix the scoreboard issue soon. We would also like to host it for people to find and try for theirselves.
