Inspiration

A lot of the time we want to buy things, but halls and RCs are usually so secluded from the rest of the world. We also enjoy the convenience of being able to sell off unwanted stuff to someone that lives a couple of doors down. Thus, we strived to create an online marketplace where hall and RC residents can seek to buy and sell stuff all on campus, making transactions quick and fuss-free.

What it does

An online marketplace platform similar to Carousell where people can sign up and either buy items from others, sell their own items, or use the chat function to negotiate deals.

How we built it

The backbone of our webapp, HTML and CSS helped provide the structure and styling of the product respectively. Bootstrap 5 provides much needed utility for styling and responsive design, allowing our web application to be used on both mobile and desktop viewports. We used React.js to help build interactive user interfaces and web applications quickly and efficiently. We made use of Cloud Firestore for our database and Firebase Authentication for user authentication for our web application.

Challenges we ran into

The members had little to no experience with web developing. We had issues with using CSS and HTML Linking to our database was difficult as we were new to react.js As we only had 25hrs, we were unable to fully complete the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to create what we have, especially with the low combined experience in coding!

What we learned

Some of us have never coded a webpage before so that was definitely eye-opening!

What's next for Hall-rousell

Features to create communities, where those for example interested in mechanical keyboards can share their experiences in the hobby and trade/buy/sell with other like-minded individuals on campus. This also helps to create strong bonds as individuals can meet up easily to chat about their experiences. Using an in-app payment system would also be beneficial to make seamless cashless payments and increasing convenience for app-users.
