Inspiration
Halal Hot Chicken Ranker brings a community leaderboard to a food niche: comparing halal hot chicken by flavor, crunch, value, and overall experience.
What it does
Visitors browse ranked restaurant cards, compare scores, vote, and read threaded comments. The app also provides a way to request another spot for the list. Its visual design emphasizes food and community rather than an analyst dashboard.
How it is built
The frontend uses vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A Node.js/Express backend provides endpoints for restaurant listings, vote changes, comments, replies, and spot requests. Mongoose connects to MongoDB for persistence when configured. Session-based vote memory helps prevent repeated clicks from applying the same vote twice, and fallback data keeps the interface usable when the API is unavailable.
My role
This is a personal web project in my GitHub portfolio. I maintain the repository and the deployed web experience.
Engineering focus
The useful part of this project is the interaction between the interface and API: handling vote changes, nested replies, serverless database connections, and graceful fallback behavior. It combines a distinct visual identity with practical full-stack web patterns.
Current status
The deployed ranking interface was checked on October 7, 2026; the gallery shows that live page. Displayed counts may come from fallback data and are not presented as verified audience metrics. Restaurant inclusion is community content rather than independent halal certification.
Next steps
Strengthen moderation, make offline state more visible, and expand automated coverage of voting and comments.
