Inspiration

Our solution was inspired by the high breast cancer-related mortality rate in developing countries typically caused because of late diagnosis. As biomedical researchers, we understand the need for early detection and we wanted to build a platform to improve breast cancer awareness and early diagnosis.

What it does

Our platform enables local health workers in India to effectively counsel rural women about breast cancer and early screening. It also helps the workers track patients' health history and provides timely reminders for follow-ups.

How we built it

We decided to build a website and mobile app based on the user's (health worker's) perspective. We created the website using Wix and developed front end with Angular 10, middle tier with .net core 3.1 EF db and used SQL server. We also built the mobile app UI using proto.io to visualize the layout of the mobile app from the health worker's perspective.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we were challenged with coming up with a technical strategy to increase outreach in rural areas and we resolved it by conducting customer interviews. We encountered some challenges with initial framework setup on what resources we need to build the website and mobile app. We also had a technical challenge with respect to company restricted policy which we were able to overcome by creating a new virtual machine. Integrating backend API with the Wix website we created also proved to be time-consuming and challenging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We effectively collaborated and accomplished most of the deliverables that we initially aimed for. We also kept each other motivated through challenging times and are proud of the team effort. We were able to validate our hypothesis by conducting customer interviews. We also got the website and backend API to integrate successfully and also built an UI for the mobile app.

What we learned

We learnt to understand the need for early detection among rural women. We also learnt to identify the most impactful strategy which is to reach a customer segment like rural women in developing countries who are most affected by breast cancer. We also learnt to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary setting and to effectively leverage diverse skill sets.

What's next for Hakuna Matatas

Complete website and mobile app development and deploy in test cities in India. Upon successful deployment in India, we would like to expand our services to other developing countries.
