News you have right now in the media are not conversational. Language is the most natural and effective way of telling things. We would like to communicate news in a way you would be talking to your knowledgeable friend. We believe that machines should communicate in a human friendly way and not the other way round. This could help to broaden the reach of news. We also wanted to provide a new approach for the journalists to report stories in a way that could be later told through conversation in natural language.
Hakawati is a talking mobile application for android , and a web platform for managing the in dept contents.
The mobile application
The application pulls the news from Aljazeera API's and and from the system we created. You can get the latest news from your preferred section: sports, weather, politics... Ask for clarification with simple questions "What's the reason behind it", "Who are the people involved? " You can know general background information: "Tell me more about Syria","What's the population of Egypt?"
The content management system
In order to deliver the stories like conversations, we created a news template for the journalist. Instead of entering one big piece of text, the article is made of paragraphs, one for each angle of the story. The journalist is invited to enter them step by step:"Short summary","People involved","Geographical Info". We suggest the most frequently asked questions for that kind of story. To add engagement, we propose different characters you can be. Choose the one that suits you best, depending on your writing style: are you the university professor who loves going in dept? Or the businessman: straight to the point and interested in the numbers? The reader will hear your story through one of these "virtual journalists"
