Inspiration

This project continues my passion for telling the story of the Haitian Revolution, one of the most significant yet underrepresented struggles for freedom in history. Part 2 focuses on Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a towering figure whose leadership transformed the Revolution into a fight for true independence. My late mother, who was Haitian, used to tell us stories of Dessalines and the Revolution, and her storytelling inspired me to bring this history to life with depth and respect. What began as personal curiosity became a mission to honor my heritage and share this story with audiences worldwide.

What I Learned

Part 2 taught me how to approach history through the lens of character. Rather than just retelling events, I explored Dessalines as a human being. His determination, his ruthlessness, his vision of freedom. I learned how to balance historical accuracy with visual storytelling and how to build tension across narrative arcs using both documentary voice and cinematic staging.

How I Built It

I used a combination of AI video tools, custom prompt engineering, and traditional editing to create a consistent visual language for the film. I incorporated historical texts and primary sources into the script, then visualized key moments of Dessalines’ life, from his rise as a general to his decisive role in declaring Haiti’s independence. The film blends narration, symbolic imagery, and stylized visuals to make the history immersive, culminating in the historic victory of 1804 when Haiti defeated Napoleon’s forces and became the first free Black republic.

Challenges

One of the greatest challenges was consistency. At the time of production, AI was still evolving, and creating a recurring character like Dessalines across many scenes required extensive iteration and workarounds. Another challenge was tone: Dessalines is both celebrated as a liberator and criticized for his brutality. I wanted to present him in full complexity without simplifying or sanitizing his story.

Outcome

The second chapter of my Haitian Revolution series captures the life and impact of Jean-Jacques Dessalines in a way that feels both educational and cinematic. It builds on Part 1 by deepening the narrative and showing the Revolution through the eyes of one of its most uncompromising leaders. It ends with Haiti’s triumph in 1804, when the enslaved rose up, defeated one of the most powerful empires of the time, and declared freedom. My hope is that this film inspires conversations about freedom, justice, and the price of liberation, while also giving long-overdue recognition to Haiti’s central role in world history.
