Inspiration
We wanted to do something funny and low-code, since we are still in a procedure of introduction into the world of coding, programming and designing, so we lack of experience in programming and designing software and algorithms (sponsors challenges seems to be really complicated :/ ). In addition, we wanted to do something different as most people are doing a sponsor challenge. We believe that making a simple videogame would be something quite peculiar to do.
What it does
It is shooter-type game that a man must defend himself with a weapon from bienes (yes, the HackUPC pet) and a Bath Duck as the final boss. Furthermore, the man will gain experience as he defeats bienes until he levels up, then he will gain in-game statistics and become stronger. The game will end if the man did not survive or the Bath Duck is defeated.
How we built it
We preferred to use a easy tool: GDeveloper. However, we never have heard about this tool though, so we learnt the basic mechanics in order to create a simple game with some HackUPC thematics. This software doesn't use any program language in particular, but it uses blocks of code that works as a algorithm.
Challenges we ran into
We didn't ran into any sponsor challenge (because it was optional :/) but the local one, IThinkUPC.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have created our first videogame.
What we learned
We learned how to use a useful program based in blocks of code. Moreover, we found how a simple/basic "2D" videogame Works inside. Specifically, we learnt about: how does the enemy run towards the player, how does the player shoot with his weapon, how does objects collide between themselves, how to paint in pixel art, how to work with variables that changes everytime that there is a particular event, how is the sequence of actions and the logic behind these type of games, how to test and debugg a game, how to animate statical images in frames, how to work with layers that each one can show or hide specific in-game elements and how to manage the time and command secuences so as not to collapse events nor to get unexpected outputs.
What's next for HackUPC Dungeon
Maybe there would be a HackUPC Dungeon 2 soon ;).
Controls for the game
Use 4 Arrows to move the character, left mouse click to shoot and there is a magic key on the keyboard that can boost your level directly ;)
