Inspiration & What it does
With the prompt 'Royalty', our team began to think about what more there was to being 'royal' than just magnificent, decadent wealth. We began to think about dynasties and lineages. There are so many animals either named after royalty, have historically been representative of royalty, or even have their own royalty too– so why not incorporate the animal kingdom into our game as well?
Rein'card'nation is a card battler inspired by games like Magic: The Gathering and Slay the Spire. You can only have one monarch, which is stronger than your other cards, but when they die, it's not game over just yet– one of your cards can be chosen to be the next-in-line as their successor.
How we built it
This game is built in the Godot engine, with music made with Musescore Studio and art made with Clip Studio Paint.
Challenges we ran into
None of our programmers have used Godot before, so getting used to how it worked was a massive hurdle at the beginning!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For 3/4ths of our team, this is our first game jamathon! We're really proud of having put together as much as we did in the time, especially with our collective previous game development experience being modifying pre-existing games and last year's game jamathon.
What we learned
There's a lot of moving parts in making a game, from code, art, to music, but they all build off of one another to create a satisfying product. Every component, even when independently made, still relies on everything else– and we all learned more ways to approach our crafts. For the artists, we learned how to push past our perfectionism in order to work on a time crunch, and for our programmers, we learned how to more quickly troubleshoot past problems and transfer our skills to a new engine.
What's next for Rein'card'nation
We have no idea!
