MoodFlix: Bridging Generations Through Film
1. Inspiration
Our journey began when we noticed:
- Family movie nights became debates between generations
- Local Ethiopian films were disappearing from digital platforms
- No service combined mood-based discovery with cultural preservation
2. What It Does
- Instant mood matching through emoji selection (😊/😢/🎭)
- Dual catalog: Curated local classics + international favorites
- Preserves cultural heritage while satisfying modern tastes
3. How We Built It
- Frontend: HTML/CSS + JavaScript for dynamic filtering
- Content Pipeline: Currently fetching local films from YouTube
- Teamwork: Divided roles among coding, design, and content research
- Adaptation: Rebuilt features three times as we learned
4. Challenges we ran into
- Team Turbulence
- Last-minute dropouts forced us to learn new skills overnight
- The Film Fragmentation Problem
We discovered Ethiopia's movie heritage exists in pieces: - Some films only available on old VHS tapes
- Others scattered across obscure YouTube channels
- No central archive exists (yet)
Our Temporary Approach:
- Manually compiling YouTube links as placeholder
- Documenting missing films for future preservation
- Reaching out to local filmmakers about collaborations
Hard Truth: We haven't solved this yet - but we've created the blueprint. MoodFlix is step one in proving these films deserve a proper home.
5. Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our greatest accomplishment wasn't technical - it was our perseverance:
- When teammates left, we redistributed the work and continued
- Through technical hurdles and time constraints, we never quit
- Created the first platform that truly serves all generations
- Proved that young developers can tackle cultural preservation
6. What We Learned
- Ideas evolve through execution (our final product changed completely)
- Cultural preservation requires digital solutions
- Team dynamics matter more than individual skills
- $$ \text{Success} = \text{Passion} \times \text{Persistence} $$
7. What's Next for MoodFlix
- Phase 1 (Current): YouTube-based local film catalog
- Phase 2 (Next): Building our own server to properly archive films
- Future Goals:
- Partner with local filmmakers for exclusive content
- Implement mood-based recommendation algorithms
- Expand to other African film industries
