Inspiration
When drew complained about the potholes in the area as we were talking about maintanece, we knew exactly what we were going to help the city with. Potholes and related car damage cost cities millions ($15 billion to overall US Driver - per AAA) of dollars which this will help alleviate.
What it does
It overlays the traffic speed data from the dataset as well as gives the user the ability to report pothole, along with a picture and their GPS mobile location.
How we built it
We started out with the real time data, but we came to find out that there was not enough data for us to extrapolate information. We eventually decided to go wit the sql data and plot out the speed overlays and run them agains the potholes that have been reported, and will be reported in future. The stack consists for Firebase for authentication, user management and real time database and photo storage. The app is a native iOS app.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the data was not as straightforward as it could have been. While we appreciate the environment variables, for a native mobile app a better api doc with api key system would have been invaluable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Over all we were able to work with people we just met and make as much progress as we have here to show. And along the way, we all learned a lot of new things like map plots, SQL, json to and from csv.
What we learned
See above.
What's next for hacktechvalley
This needs to be a tradition so that people can learn more and develop the skills further. A better way to create teams would be good to maybe sorting their choices by preference and letting them filter by skillsets.
