Inspiration

Research shows that the average American produces 254 million tons of trash annually but recycles only 34% percent of its waste. Can we improve the correct disposal of waste by educating and improving individual habits by providing an intelligent tools with AI and computer vision?

What it does

We present Doyen, an educational and AI assistant who helps you build habits to recycle and proper waste disposal. In Doyen, you can sign up, and learn about your current knowledge of waste management with a quick quiz and select the common activity e.g. cooking, cleaning the house or even big event like partying where you want to improve your waste management intelligence.

With the Try Doyen feature, we provide a computer vision-assisted AI app where you can scan your trash item, recognize it and get to know which bin it will go, for example, polyethylene plastic bag into the blue bin, banana into the green bin and so on. This AI app will help you build muscle memory and the habit of recycling if you are unsure near the trash bin.

How we built it

Webpage with HTML, CSS and Javascript platform and React Native App with cloud vision API for object detection and an ML model for trash bin recommendation for each trash item.

Challenges we ran into

  • Brainstorming with the user needs with the app and building features corresponding those needs
  • Building the react native app with integration of App with the API and recommendation of garbage bin from waste text/image using ML model
  • Deploying the app and model in firebase google cloud storage

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building the educational website with the onboarding page, goals and habits
  • Providing the assistive AI tool for improving recycling using Try Doyen feature

What we learned

  • App development using react native and integration of firebase platform and google cloud API integration
  • User Analysis and coming up with solutions with AI technology

What's next for HackPSU Doyen Recycling Education AI Assistant

  • Extending app with building leaderboard with points associated with rewards from the waste management authority
  • Improvising the model with additional bins categories e.g. metal, electronic waste etc.
