🚀 Hackord – Making Hackathons Simpler, Smarter, and More Collaborative
Inspiration
Every hackathon starts with excitement, but it also comes with a familiar set of challenges. Finding teammates with the right skills, brainstorming a strong project idea, keeping everyone aligned, and managing tasks under a tight deadline can quickly become overwhelming.
During previous hackathons, we found ourselves constantly switching between different tools like Discord, Google Docs, Trello, GitHub, and Notion. Instead of focusing on building our project, we were spending too much time organizing everything else.
That experience inspired us to build Hackord—a platform designed specifically for hackathons, where participants can collaborate, organize, and build innovative projects without the chaos of juggling multiple applications.
What it does
Hackord is an all-in-one collaboration platform built for hackathon participants.
It helps teams throughout their entire journey—from forming a team to submitting their final project.
With Hackord, users can:
- 🤖 Generate AI-powered project ideas
- 👥 Find teammates based on skills and interests
- 📋 Create and manage project tasks
- 💬 Collaborate with teammates in one workspace
- 📂 Store important project resources
- 📈 Track development progress
- 🚀 Showcase completed projects
Instead of jumping between several different platforms, everything needed for a hackathon is available in one place.
How we built it
We built Hackord using a modern full-stack web development approach.
The frontend was developed with Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, allowing us to build a fast, responsive, and clean user interface.
For authentication, we integrated NextAuth.js, while MongoDB handles user and project data. The backend is powered by Next.js API Routes, and the entire application is deployed on Vercel for fast and reliable hosting.
Throughout development, we focused on creating a scalable architecture so that new AI-powered features and integrations can easily be added in the future.
Challenges we ran into
Like every hackathon project, building Hackord came with its own challenges.
One of the biggest difficulties was designing a workflow that feels simple while supporting multiple stages of a hackathon—from team formation to project submission.
We also spent significant time improving authentication, structuring the database for projects and teams, optimizing performance, and making sure the platform worked well across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
Finding the right balance between adding useful features and keeping the interface clean was probably our biggest design challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to transform an everyday hackathon problem into a working platform.
Some highlights include:
- Building a complete end-to-end hackathon collaboration platform
- Creating a clean and responsive user experience
- Implementing secure authentication and project management
- Designing a scalable architecture for future AI integrations
- Bringing multiple hackathon tools together into a single workspace
Most importantly, we built something that we would genuinely want to use in our own future hackathons.
What we learned
Hackord gave us hands-on experience working with modern web technologies and taught us a lot about building production-ready applications.
Along the way, we improved our understanding of:
- Next.js App Router
- Authentication with NextAuth.js
- MongoDB data modeling
- API design
- Responsive UI development
- Full-stack application architecture
- Team collaboration and project planning
We also learned that solving a real problem often matters more than simply adding more features.
What's next for Hackord
Hackord is only the beginning.
We plan to make it an even more powerful platform by introducing features such as:
- AI Mentor for project guidance
- AI-powered code review
- GitHub integration
- Discord integration
- Real-time team collaboration
- AI pitch deck generation
- AI documentation assistant
- Smart teammate recommendations
- Leaderboards and achievements
- Sponsor and mentor dashboards
- Blockchain-based participation certificates
Our long-term vision is to build Hackord into the go-to platform for hackathons—helping students, developers, designers, and innovators collaborate more effectively and turn great ideas into successful projects.
