Hacking Covid

When thinking of a project to do, we were interested in providing resources for Americans experiencing Covid-19 fatigue. We wanted to alleviate that stress by providing games, recipes, movies.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the discord chat filled with people passionate about many different interests, including cooking, listening to music, and art. The enthusiasm of fellow hackers inspired us to share some of our passions with others who may also be experiencing COVID-19 fatigue, and just general boredom. Our website gives users suggestions on how they can spend their time, as well as ways they can interact with new people and friends if they are experiencing loneliness.

What it does

Our website has different sections that should keep viewers entertained for days! Viewers can try out new online games, find new movies, search for books, and try out new recipes.

How we built it

We used CSS, HTML, and JavaScript to code our website, using the help of templates and other online resources. We also used Google Domains, Google Cloud, and Github to store our data and turn it into a website.

Challenges we ran into

We had never coded in CSS, HTML, or JavaScript before, so we had to learn the syntax from scratch. We also utilized helpful websites for web development and integration such as W3 schools and Stack Overflow. We had a hard time turning our HTML code into an actual website using a domain and getting the certificate approved. The video also failed to record Hannah speaking since it was over zoom.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of ourselves for making a website since it is something that 3 days ago we never thought we could do. We are also extremely proud of ourselves for working so hard over the past 2 days and never giving up. We worked morning to night and learned so much through the process.

What we learned

We learned about the community of web developers, as well as how to link images to websites, add images to websites, add text boxes, how navbars work, how Google Cloud works, and so much more in between. We also gained important communication and team-building skills.

What's next for Hacking Covid

Next, we would love to further improve our website and in the future add Machine Learning capabilities to add more customized recommendations to the user. We would also love to create more websites in the future and learn even more about HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
