Inspiration HackGem was inspired by the frustration of sharing streaming and content accounts without any real personalization or control. The goal was to create a clean, family‑friendly interface where every person—owner, partner, kids, and friends—gets a dedicated, secure space tailored to their tastes, instead of a messy, shared home screen.
What it does HackGem lets users create multiple profiles on a single account, each with its own identity, preferences, and viewing history. Every profile sees personalized recommendations, and owners can manage access levels so kids and guests only see what is appropriate for them.
How we built it HackGem was built as a responsive web app using a modern frontend framework for the smooth, tile‑based UI and a backend with secure authentication and role‑based access control for profiles. The data layer stores user preferences, watch history, and profile metadata so switching profiles is instant and seamless.
Challenges we ran into One major challenge was designing a layout that looks simple but still scales well from small screens to large TVs while keeping the focus on each profile tile. Another challenge was correctly isolating recommendations, history, and settings between profiles so that one user’s activity never interferes with another’s experience.
Accomplishments we are proud of The team is proud of delivering a polished “Who’s watching?” experience that feels intuitive from the very first use. Achieving fast profile switching with smooth animations and maintaining clean separation of data between users were key technical wins.
What we learned Building HackGem taught the team how important UX is when multiple users share a single device every day. There were also valuable lessons in structuring backend data models for multi‑profile systems and in balancing design aesthetics with performance.
What’s next for HackGem Next steps include adding richer parental controls, profile‑based time limits, and deeper analytics to improve recommendations. The team also plans to integrate with more content sources and explore launching HackGem as a plug‑and‑play profile layer that other streaming or media apps can adopt.
