Inspiration
I have a three year old kid, and during the time raising him, I had many incidents when I was confused whether I should go see a doctor or not. I went to emergency room at least 5 times, but there are times when it is tricky. I looked up everywhere to find out what diseases might be related to the symptoms, but I couldn't find any application or web service I was looking for, and information from blogs and posts were so hard to find and inaccurate.
What it does
It combines the patient's characteristics such as gender, age, etc and combine them with symptoms to map related diseases with probability. Through talking with a chat bot, the process is not as tedious as answering questions in a form, and it is really easy and quick to find responses. When the patient is done talking with the bot, it will make a report which includes the diseases related to the symptoms.
How I built it
I used Node.js on the server side, and EJS, jquery, css on the frontend.
Challenges I ran into
I had two other teammates, but they had to see a friend in a hospital. They never came back, so I had to build the prototype by myself in very limited time. If there were more time or more people, I might have actually found right data sets and develop a good matching algorithm. Also, I lacked knowledge in medical industry, so I had to rely on my experience about seeing doctors to build this application's process.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
As I was talking to others, many people thought this was a great idea and liked UI/UX. I was proud that people gave me positive feedback for a prototype I built.
What I learned
I was going through UI/UX trends and learned how to connect my idea to these trends to optimize user experience.
What's next for hackcwru
I have some ideas to expand this application.
- Recommending medicines with useful information like why this medicine is suitable for this age of patient and if this medicine needs a prescription. How much this particular patient should consume the medicine daily.
- Connecting actual doctors around you and provide doctors with information the patient already answered.
- IOT - Visible symptoms can't solely define all diseases. If we build a hardware connected to the application, the patient can do things like blood test at home to get more accurate prediction or send the data to doctors.
- Collect and analyze user feedback to perform machine learning and enhance the matching algorithm.
