Inspiration
After thorough research on the problems participants face when participating in hackathons, 3 problems stood out to me. These problems are; Lack of Resources Incoherent deadlines Improper collaboration between teammates. And the idea for “HackaWon” was birthed.
What it does
HackaWon is a simplistic app deeply rooted in the presence of hackathons. This does not limit it to just hackathons. It can be used for day-to-day task management and reading up on the latest news in the hackathon community.
HackaWon works as an intermediary between a participant and the tools he/she will need during the hackathon. It provides the links to these resources and thus, curbs the problem of lack of resources. Hackawon aims to connect to your Google Calendar and thus, helps you manage your time before, during, and after a hackathon.
Hackawon also provides an easy-to-use chat interface, including voice calls, and video calls. Teamwork just got a lot more effective with HackaWon. And as a bonus, HackaWon has a blog that dispenses the latest trends, announcements, news, and general happenings in the hackathon community.
How we built it
Being a UX design trainee who currently takes the Google Certificate course is a very huge step n the right direction. I, the team lead, had a series of brainstorming sessions with the team, and after we agreed on the features that will be included in the app, and agreed on the initial low-fidelity design, I got to work using Figma.
I implemented these designs, we edited them, and I then made them interactive. The interactivity helps to simulate a real-life situation of the app in use.
Challenges we ran into
Coming to a definite decision on a design was one thing. We spent more time in the brainstorming stage than we did in the design phase.
Another thing was sticking to the rules of our design sprint. We would have loved to finish these designs earlier and turn the project in, but we let personal circumstances mess up our timeline, and that is something we need to work on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was just our second hackathon, but we can say that we're better organized than we were in our previous hackathon. We have a winning mentality, even when the project seems almost overwhelming, and that helped spur us to work late nights to get the project ready in time.
What we learned
The brainstorming phase has to be the most important phase of the UX design stages. No matter how ridiculous we think an idea is, we should always suggest it, so that we can explore all available ideas.
We have also learned that we shouldn't be scared to make a change, no matter how far we have gone in our design. Designing with our users in mind will make us understand that the user experience is our priority.
What's next for HackaWon
If we win the prize money, HackaWon could be redesigned a bit, with some additions and subtractions here and there. The prize money, if we win the hackathon, will be used to create the app and put it out there on Google Playstore and the iOS Appstore.
