Inspiration
Our inspiration came mainly from living in the United States and having background experience in the food industry. Everywhere you go in the United States, especially in the cities like the one we are in today, you encounter fast food restaurants. Also, one of the most common issues in the United States comes with food allergies or other dietary restrictions, as 1 in 10 Americans suffer from an allergy. That comes out to around 33 million Americans who aren't able to eat certain foods at fast food restaurants. We have firsthand experience of this as one of us has a family member with a peanut and gluten allergy. The amount of difficulty that it takes to find what you would like to get at a fast food restaurant is unnecessary, so we fixed it with our project.
What it does
Our code uses a self-made McDonalds menu to find what food people can and can't eat with an allergy. It runs through each of the fast food orders in the menu and responds with the foods that they can and can't eat to save time and effort when finding foods to eat. It also runs multiple times until the user says that they have no more dietary restrictions left in case people have more than one.
How we built it
We used python code to compile our product and created our own json file to add what products are on the menu and what restrictions they have correlated with the foods. We then made an if else list to see
Challenges we ran into
We had to completely learn how to use json files and were struggling to find api menus of any fast food restaurants for free. We also had to learn much of the code because we have limited background in python. Also, we had to work together to find an idea that we all enjoyed and could work on together happily.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all proud of finishing our code. It took awhile to make and we are proud with the finished product that we came up with. We also are proud to have an idea that is able to help some people get through their daily lives easier.
What we learned
We learned how to successfully use API and Json files with python. We also got a deeper understanding of python code and how to make projects with it. Lastly, we learned to work with eachother and overcome problems together.
What's next for HackathonProject
Next, we will expand our code to work with more restaurants than just McDonalds. We will allow the people to pick their type of food they are interested in first and direct them to different fast food places based on it. We will also expand its usage and maybe create a website around it.
