Inspiration
As students ourselves, we realized how difficult it is to navigate life beyond the classroom. Many of us are filled with ambition but lack right guidance or role models who truly understand our unique goals. While teachers provide academic support and peers provide discussions about hypothetical futures, they often can’t fill the gap when it comes to real-world decisions. Teachers may feel far from our stage of life and friends may not have the experience to share any insights. At the same time, alumni and families hold a sea of untold stories. Lessons from their first jobs, struggles at university and personal turning points. These stories often remain locked away. Sprouts was born out of this gap. We wanted to create a bridge that connects the ambition and curiosity of students with the experiences and insights of alumni. A place where curiosity is nurtured, ambition is supported, and no one has to journey alone. Our inspiration came from the belief that even small “sprouts” of connection can blossom into lasting impact and global change.
What it does
Sprouts connects students with alumni through meaningful mentorship, safe communities, and global connections. It provides interactive tools like time capsules, global maps, and storytelling spaces to help students visualize growth and impact. Future features like the Story Vault and Skill Exchange will expand Sprouts into a living ecosystem where mentorship, knowledge, and opportunities flow both ways.
How we built it
We designed Sprouts with a student-first mindset, focusing on three main ideas: growth, mentorship, and storytelling. We built the platform using web development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and integrated Leaflet.js to create the interactive global connections map. The project was developed collaboratively on Replit, which allowed us to work together and share progress in real time, and quickly test new features.
Challenges we ran into
At first, we approached Sprouts in a completely different way. We tried building it with VSCode, setting up a full backend with PHP and XAMPP. Everything was working well, that is until our XAMPP suddenly crashed. Troubleshooting it in the middle of limited time proved extremely difficult, and we realized we needed to pivot quickly. With the deadline right under the table, we rebuilt the entire project from scratch using a simpler, more lightweight setup. It was a stressful moment, but it taught us resilience and adaptability, and in the end, we managed to persevere and deliver.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Developing unique tools like time capsules and gobal connections map that go beyond traditional mentorship platforms. Building an idea that prioritizes sustainability and long-term impact rather than short-term connections.
What we learned
This project taught us more than just coding. From the technical side, we learned the importance of choosing the right tools for the right timeline sometimes simpler solutions (like Replit and front-end tools) are more effective than setting up a complex backend under time pressure. We also became better at debugging under stress and adapting quickly when things didn’t go as planned. Beyond the technical side, we learned that building Sprouts isn’t just about features, it’s about understanding people. We realized how valuable untold stories can be, how much students crave relatable guidance, and how important it is to create spaces that are safe, inclusive, and meaningful. Most of all, we learned that resilience, teamwork, and adaptability are just as important as technical skills in turning an idea into reality.
What's next for Sprouts
Story Vault:
Alumni/families can record short video/audio stories (“How I got my first job,” “My biggest lesson at university,” “Cultural traditions”). Acts as a living library of experiences that connects the past with the present. Skill Exchange:
Students offer skills (e.g., coding help, design work, language tutoring) in exchange for mentorship hours. Builds mutual benefit and keeps connections active. Profile Verification AI Match for connections Better Visuals
