Inspiration

Going through school learning science topics and scientific thinking, we have noticed that most curriculums fail to teach creativity in the lens of science. Pairing this creative thinking with knowledge about key topics like climate change, weather consciousness, and sustainability.

What it does

Using weather measurement tools, this kit will teach students how to think creatively about scientific topics like measurement by creating their own systems of measurement, as well as creative recycling to make tools that have real world and scientific applications.

How we built it

Using a mix of cheap, readily available materials along with a large amount of common waste items, we created sustainable measurement tools including a barometer, thermometer, anemometer, and possibly some others.

Challenges we ran into

Finding the proper resources that would be strong enough to support the system and also cheap enough to be accessible to anyone.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some really cool looking weather tools!

What we learned

Sustainability is not a simple topic to solve, and balancing functionality with limited resources is a tough task

What's next for The Weather Boyz

Using the information and perspective on sustainability we learned here to continue on by helpig other organizations in the future. Hopefully also more hackathons!

Our initial idea is to create a cheap/reusable weather station which includes a barometer, thermometer, rain gauge, and wind stock. This station will be very easy to assemble and will teach students about fields such as earth and life sciences, chemistry, physics, statistics, and much more.
