Inspiration

Our inspiration came from a website that showed families and their living conditions depending on their income. We first encountered this website during our IGCSE geography class, and when we saw the theme, it reminded us of that example. This inspired us to create an application that demonstrates various pictures taken around the world at the same moment in time.

What it does

The application allows people to upload their pictures with details such as time, date, country, and city. These pictures are organized by time and then shown randomly to users, based on their selected time filter. While this may sound similar to social media, it is fundamentally different: there are no likes, follows, or algorithms to guess user preferences. The goal is not to highlight how well someone lives, but to connect people with each other through shared realities.

How we built it

Although we were not able to build the actual application due to limited time and technical skills, we created a rough design and template of specific function for it.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge we identified is the loss of connection between people caused by capitalism. Capitalism has given us enormous benefits and improved our quality of life, but it also made people believe that financial gain is the most important goal. This obsession has made many numb to the pain and circumstances of others, contributing to disconnection. To address this, we designed an application that not only allows users to share culture but also shows what is happening “now.” By noticing critical global or national issues while living their everyday life, users may gain a stronger awareness of these realities.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are proud that our team focused on proposing a realistic solution rather than an idealized but impractical one. Unrealistic solutions have little value, so we worked hard to prove why this application could realistically have a worldwide impact. This grounded approach, along with the critical solution we suggest, is our key accomplishment.

What we learned

Our team learned that while our world is physically advancing through innovation, it is also declining psychologically. This realization gave us awareness of the issue and motivated us to create a solution that can counteract it.
