Inspiration
We were inspired by the current commotion in the public regarding possible permanent off-world colonies. With the advent of private owned space companied, like SpaceX owned by Elon Musk, we were inspired to put players in the position of a founder of their very own space colony. We wanted them to feel the pressure of being responsible for a colony of humans on a desolate planet.
What it does
Our game has an isometric grid system which allows the player to build different fundamental facilities and fun attractions in their space colony. Making your planet seem fun and attractive will cause people to flock to your colony, but without fundamental facilities, like hydroponic farms and air treatment plants, the public health will plummet. The key to the game is balancing the necessary facilities and fun attractions to create thriving colony,
How we built it
The main code was programmed using python with its extension pygame. The art was done using pixilart.com.
Challenges we ran into
In order to draw our isometric grid, coordinates on a cartesian plane had to be converted to coordinates on an isometric plane using a certain algorithm. It can become confusing, especially when we are trying to render hundreds of objects.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our isometric grid and our amazing pixel artwork.
What we learned
Pygame has a very limited amount of features and can be very difficult to use at times. In addition, using the simplest code can be very helpful when you are working with a big project.
What's next for Space Colonization Game
We will try to debug more, and eventually release it so people can experience being the founder of their own space colony.
