Inspiration ...

The inspiration behind the idea of our site was that there are many sites to boost productivity in other areas of ones life, but there aren't many options available when it comes down to academics. To begin, we collectively thought what people generally do that helps them study better. After sifting through ideas, we came to the conclusion that for most individuals, studying with another person, is what motivates them and helps them in boosting there productivity. This inspired us to apply profile matching in terms of ones academic preferences and attributes, which is the idea of our project.

What it does

Our site allows a user to register with their preferred study methods and academic information which we collect using a self-assessment form. Then, the user is welcomed to our home page where they will be able to see a list of all the people they matched with, and can then select study buddies from there. Whenever a user needs to lock in and feel motivated, they can connect with a study buddy that is online to work with and be productive. A user is given options to chat or call with buddies based on there needs.

How we built it

We built this project by breaking it into smaller tasks of the backend portion and the frontend portion which allowed us to make sure each component was working individually. We then planned to combine all the components together so that they work together and act as a site that users can use to find study buddies.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge of this project was the idea of combining all the different components which were in Java, HTML, CSS, and PHP together, all while ensuring everything works in a synchronized manner and harmoniously.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we compiled all of the skills we had learned to date through course assignments and self learning, and put them to use and created a larger project which serves a purpose. We are also very proud of being able to figure out working as a team and communicating which are both skills that are crucial in the industry.

What we learned

The biggest skill we gained from creating this project was learning how to put together small skills or topics we previously had and making something larger out of that. Not only that, but we also learned how to adapt to the needs of the project and expand our knowledge and understanding regarding a topic quickly so that we can implement it in our project. In terms of programming languages, we mainly developed out Java, html, and css skills and got a better idea of how to tailor and implement the respective languages as a project requires. More importantly, working as a team showed us how to share knowledge and techniques which helped us all gain something from the experience.

What's next for LOCKED-IN

Our next step would be to ensure the website we created properly works and we can test it out in many ways considering the pool of users will be quite diverse. Not only that, but in the future, new features or fixes can also take place. This also include making more inclusive major options, as well as, filtering by country just to name a few.
