🌱 Inspiration
In a world overwhelmed by fast consumerism, it’s hard to make responsible shopping choices. Most people don’t know if the products they buy align with sustainable values — and there are very few platforms that encourage the resale of eco-friendly goods. That’s why we built Green Cart — where smart shopping meets sustainability.
⚙️ What It Does
Green Cart empowers users to:
- ♻️ Evaluate the sustainability of products by analyzing materials, manufacturing, and environmental impact.
- 🌿 Discover greener alternatives while browsing online.
- 🛒 Buy & sell eco-conscious products in a dedicated marketplace — supporting a circular economy.
🛠️ How we built it
- React for a responsive and clean front end.
- NestJS for our backend API.
- Web scraping tools to extract product data from platforms like Amazon and eBay.
- Google Gemini models to analyze product descriptions and determine sustainability levels.
- Tailwind CSS for styling and responsive design.
- Python to train and fine-tune our AI model for sustainability scoring.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Parsing and standardizing product data from different marketplaces was more complex than expected.
- Integrating the backend with live scraping and frontend display while keeping performance smooth.
- Handling inconsistent product metadata and images during scraping.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- ✅ Successfully built a website and extension that analyzes and scores sustainability.
- 🛍️ Created a user-friendly marketplace that supports both buying and selling.
- 💡 Integrated AI-driven product evaluation into a real-time shopping assistant.
- 🌍 Enabled a mission-driven product that has potential real-world impact.
📚 What we learned
- How to leverage AI models like Gemini for real-world product analysis.
- Building a smooth frontend-backend flow with React and NestJS.
- Importance of UX when encouraging sustainable behavior — users want it to be easy and informative.
- The power and complexity of working with live data scraping and third-party APIs.
🚀 What's next for GreenCart
- Partnering with eco-friendly brands to populate the platform with verified sustainable products.
- Creating a marketplace for sustainable products, with community-driven upcycling ideas and tools that promote recycling and eco-friendly living.
