Inspiration
Modern repositories are growing more complex every day. Developers often spend hours understanding project architecture, dependencies, impacted files, and implementation risks before they can begin working on a task. We wanted to create a solution that helps developers make faster and more informed engineering decisions by understanding the repository first and recommending solutions second.
What it does
Hack4t Orbit is a Staff Engineer assistant powered by GitLab Orbit.
It helps developers:
- Understand repository architecture
- Analyze feature and bug impacts
- Identify affected files and dependencies
- Generate implementation plans
- Recommend testing strategies
- Accelerate developer onboarding
- Support sprint planning and technical decision-making
Its core principle is:
"Understand First. Build Smarter."
How we built it
Hack4t Orbit was built using the GitLab Duo Agent Platform and GitLab Orbit.
We designed a repository intelligence workflow that leverages repository context, architecture information, dependencies, issues, merge requests, and documentation to provide actionable engineering guidance. The agent combines repository analysis, impact assessment, planning, onboarding support, and testing recommendations into a single experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing an experience that goes beyond traditional coding assistants. Instead of simply generating responses, we wanted Hack4t Orbit to understand repository context and provide recommendations that are relevant to the structure and relationships within a project.
Another challenge was organizing complex repository insights into concise and actionable recommendations that developers can quickly understand and apply.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a repository-aware Staff Engineer assistant.
- Created a workflow focused on repository intelligence and impact analysis.
- Developed onboarding, planning, testing, and repository analysis capabilities.
- Designed a solution that transforms repository context into actionable engineering insights.
- Demonstrated how GitLab Orbit can improve software development workflows.
What we learned
Through building Hack4t Orbit, we learned the importance of repository context in developer productivity. Understanding architecture, dependencies, and project relationships before making recommendations leads to more relevant insights and better engineering decisions.
We also gained valuable experience working with GitLab Orbit and exploring how repository intelligence can support planning, debugging, onboarding, and software delivery.
What's next for Hack4t Orbit
Future plans include:
- Repository health scoring
- Interactive architecture visualizations
- Advanced dependency mapping
- Security and compliance insights
- Technical documentation generation
- Automated sprint planning
- Personalized onboarding experiences
- Voice-assisted repository navigation
- Real-time repository intelligence and recommendations
Our goal is to evolve Hack4t Orbit into a complete repository intelligence platform that helps teams understand, plan, build, and maintain software systems more effectively.
