Inspiration

I thought of an idea for a hackathon and I came up with an idea that could help towards a hackathon.

What it does

I thought that short events like this could use their own page, as they have are fast moving and quick to change if required. It's almost like a Google Classroom, with how teachers and students have different roles. It allows organizers to make announcements to all participants, and view the important information of the event.

Once the user is brought to the page of their event (in this case: Hack the Ridge), they can choose their correct role, an organizer or participant. Organizers or execs have more abilities than participants, they can make announcements and see the entire roster of the event, participants and other execs. The organizer page is also protected by a password to protect from stragglers messing with the event. An executive would be given this password beforehand to be given access to the platform. The participant section is unguarded, and has less privileges accordingly. This view is able to see any announcements made by the organizers. They are also able to see the schedule, as well as the executives so they know who to contact for help.

How we built it

I made this application in IDLE using the Tkinter library.

Challenges we ran into

I've used Tkinter last year for my grade 11 ICS course, but needed a bit of a refresher today. I got hung up on how to view multiple windows instead of having everything on one, which is essential for any app. I got past it and moved forward. I also did not leave myself much time near the end, so I was scrambling to finish, but that's just a part of the fun.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of some of the smaller features of the program, like how the password entry box displays all the characters as stars, and the seamless navigation between windows using buttons.

What we learned

To hack more at a hackathon. Leave more time for coding so you can get everything in your program. I wish I could have added a couple more features.

What's next for Hack the Ridge - Curtis Sinopoli

I think I'll try to do more hackathons in the future, maybe with a team next time. I like the fast pace coding, it makes for a strong sense of motivation to finish.
