Inspiration
The goal of Hacking the Glass Ceiling is to inform and empower women in tech. We want to increase awareness of diversity issues concerning women and minorities in STEM fields, and provide resources to help navigate these issues.
What it does
This web application has three main components. There is a homepage to acquaint users with current statistics on underrepresentation and unequal pay in the professional sphere. The resources page displays current opportunities in the educational and professional worlds. Lastly, the chat page features a chatbot and dialogue suggestions so that users can practice what they might say in scenarios historically associated with gender bias and inequality. In building the application, we seek to educate, inspire, and empower women and historically underrepresented groups to be confident and assertive in their careers so that they can hack their own glass ceiling.
How we built it
We used bootstrap create-react-app for the project initialization, and Google's Material-UI Kit for many of the interface components. This allowed us to maintain a consistent theme and build the application quickly. To deploy and host the application, we used Google's Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Our most significant challenges stemmed from CSS styling and firebase deployment. Adopting the use of flexbox vastly helped with formatting the components of the application, and reading through the documentation and support for firebase deployment cleared up some misconceptions that were prohibiting successful deployment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of how quickly we were able to pick up and start using React effectively. Only one of us had experience beforehand, but all were able to contribute to the project. Additionally, we are proud of our mastery of flex-box CSS styling and responsive design.
What we learned
React, Javascript, Git/GitHub, CSS (flexbox especially), Firebase deployment
What's next for Hack The Glass Ceiling
Expanding the chatbot to use Microsoft's Cognitive Services in parsing the user input and adapting responses over time.
