Inspiration
We were inspired by the current political situation in our country (Brazil). Many people don’t understand how our Democracy works and, because of that, don’t value the essential process of voting and choosing our representatives purposefully. In our market research, more than 70% of those interviewed said they think that the brazilian political landscape is too complicated to understand. Therefore, we wanted to provide a solution to make the topic of politics easier to digest and more fun to learn.
What it does
Capivare.me makes learning about politics fun and accessible with gamification elements. The idea is that you take your time and make progress at your own pace; Starting with a learning path where you can find some light but informative reading about the related topic you chose. Using cards and quizzes, you are capable of exploring different topics about the political organization of our country, such as political roles or how laws are made. By completing these quizzes, you can win achievements and track your progress inside the app.
How we built it
Our app is a PWA built using TypeScript and React JS for the front-end. Trello and Discord were crucial tools to organize our team and maintain constant communication. First, we prototyped the design using Figma. Then, we started creating components and using them to fill the screens. It is entirely in Brazilian Portuguese to appeal to our target audience, Brazilians.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was the time zone difference, making us have to double-check the schedule. Another challenge was the time since many of our team have jobs and college projects to attend to. So, we only started the project 4 hours after its beginning.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We are really proud of our planning and workflow. Before anything else, we focused on making the visual prototype, so the developers could properly focus on implementing the logic and not having to figure out how the screens should look like. We had enough time to rest, and we didn’t feel overloaded at all. We’re also very proud of the design and final product. Even with less initial time to work due to time zone differences, we were able to finish the first part of our MVP in what we would call an amazing experience of teamwork. And, the most important thing, everyone had fun!
What we learned
That was the first time participating in a Hackathon for most of our team, so the whole experience was a huge opportunity to learn. We learned about product design, gamification, user experience, team communication and MVP.
What’s next for Capivare.me
Some next steps for the app:
- Develop the second part of the app, the ‘evaluate’ section.
- Add a back-end and database to uncouple our services and better integrate the environment.
- Improve the UI, making it more appealing and interesting.
