Inspiration

Before the list of challenges was released, our group was already set on an app similar to the Play Pono Points. We were inspired by the adverse effects of tourism on the land, people, wildlife, and how to combat it. We wanted to make a fun educational app where users can read through information about Hawaii's lands, customs, and wildlife. An app that really inspired us was the Hawaii Driver's License app.

What it does

The app contains a home page, stating the mission and showing images of how disruptive tourists can be. There is a second page with information on some species in Hawaii and the Department of Land and Natural Resources, who proposed this challenge. The information listed would be about the species themselves and how tourists should act when coming in contact with one of these animals. Lastly, there is the actual game itself with a quiz.

How we built it

We built it using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into were trying to format everything through HTML and CSS. Our major drawback was our inexperience with JavaScript. We had to rely on videos and the internet to help us with what to do. For our app, we wanted to use SQL, however, we had little to no experience with that language so we couldn't really work with it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Accomplishments that we are proud of were honestly completing this part of the challenge. Despite our inexperience, we still persevered and we got a lot of experience along the way. Another accomplishment that the group had was our idea. We had a similar idea to the Play Pono Points and that just showed that our though process was in line with what was being asked of us.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned more about the adverse effects of tourism. Of course, we already knew some, but this project deepened our knowledge further. Another thing we learned was familiarizing ourselves with coding languages we were unfamiliar with (more specifically, JavaScript). We also learned that Hawaii has many endangered species that need to be protected (More than just sea turtles and monk seals)

What's next for HACC2021 Rajahz - Pono Points Game Technical Review

In the future, our group will strive to learn and familiarize ourselves with other coding languages and even other software that could possibly help us in more Hackathons. We also want to keep practicing the languages we are familiar with, which are HTML and CSS. An alternative for us would be to try low or no code, however, we may not get the same experience as we do when we do actual coding.
