Inspiration

Me and my friends always have ambitious ideas of what we want to become, how we will improve ourselves. We always end up promising ourselves to do something, like practice piano every day, make my bed everyday, do some french practice everyday, but we always ended up forgetting, or losing motivation. Then I had the idea to combine something like Duolingo streaks with other parts of life, and there was my app idea. I needed this app for myself, so I thought I might as well do it as a part of this Hackathon.

What it does

It is a simple, easy to use, nice looking daily habit tracker, that also applies the simple concept of streaks to incentivize long term success, and slightly gamify the process. It allows you to check previous days of habits and see what you did and didn't do. I believe that this could greatly benefit at the very least one person, even if it ends up being just me or my friends.

How we built it

We used a cross platform framework written in Rust called Tauri to write our program. Tauri supports Android, IOS, Mac, Linux, and Windows all from one code-base, using popular JavaScript frameworks like SvelteKit and React, so I decided that this would be the best option. I selected SvelteKit for my frontend UI framework, as well as tailwind for styling The backend consists of a simple SQLite database run locally for optimal performance.

Challenges we ran into

  • I am new to the Tauri V2 framework and API, and this lack of knowledge posed as both a challenge, and a learning opportunity to me.
  • The SQLite database had to be redesigned and refactored many times to get the ideal representation of our habit data

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Finding a nice workable and efficient database design
  • Nice aesthetics
  • Ease of use
  • My personal improvement with designing apps

What we learned

  • How to use the basics of the Tauri V2 API
  • Some Basics of mobile Development
  • Sometimes it is better to plan than to run your head against a wall for hours
  • Basics of UX and app design
  • Sometimes the more simple the better

What's next for Habitz

  • More Gamification
  • Notification reminders
  • Repeated habits (eg. drink water 5 times a day)
  • Weekly, Monthly habits
  • Scheduled Habits (like "Review week of notes" on Fridays)
  • Potential app store release?

Thank you guys for organizing this for us all, we appreciate it and I look forward to next year (:
