Inspiration
Most habit apps treat a missed day like a moral failure. One slip and the streak is gone, the progress feels erased, and the guilt sets in. We wanted something different. An app that supports both the hard work of quitting destructive habits and the steady work of building better ones, without the shame.
HabitLuma came from a simple belief: progress should feel honest and sustainable. Life happens. People slip. The right tool should record that reality cleanly and help you keep going, not punish you for being human.
What it does
HabitLuma is a calm iPhone habit tracker designed for two kinds of progress.
Quitting habits
Track the days since your last slip. One honest tap resets the counter when you need to. Your history stays intact.
Building habits
Mark the days you show up. The calendar fills in around your real schedule.
Key features:
- One focused home screen showing all active streaks, current streak, best streak, and today’s status
- Color-coded Quitting and Building habits so you always know which is which
- Full calendar history for every habit
- Clear insights: consistency percentage, total days logged, 7-day view, and best streaks
- Monthly streak freezes for the days life genuinely gets in the way
- Simple daily check-in. Open the app, mark your day, and move on
No clutter. No gamified pressure. Just a quiet place to stay consistent.
How we built it
HabitLuma is a native iOS app built with SwiftUI. We focused on speed, clarity, and a calm visual language. The experience centers on a single daily check-in flow, and the difference between quitting and building habits is a core part of the product, not an afterthought.
Local data handling keeps the app fast and private, while RevenueCat powers monetization cleanly in the background.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest product challenge was designing streak behavior that felt honest rather than punitive. Traditional “break the streak and start over” logic creates anxiety. We spent a lot of time refining the reset and freeze systems so users could be truthful without feeling like they had lost everything.
Balancing simplicity with useful insights was another constant tension. We wanted meaningful data like consistency, best streaks, and calendar history, without turning the app into a dashboard. Every screen had to earn its place.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a dual-mode habit system (Quitting and Building) that actually feels different to use
- Designing streak freezes and honest resets that remove shame while still keeping accountability
- Shipping a calm, focused interface that users can open once a day without feeling overwhelmed
- Building something that supports both breaking bad habits and forming good ones in the same app
What we learned
We learned that the emotional design of a habit tracker matters as much as the features. Small decisions (how a missed day is recorded, how color is used, how much information is shown at once) have a big impact on whether someone keeps coming back.
We also reinforced that restraint is a feature. Saying no to extra complexity made the core experience stronger.
What's next for HabitLuma
- Deeper insights and gentle pattern detection (without turning into another analytics dashboard)
- Optional widgets and thoughtful notifications that respect the user’s attention
- Continued refinement of the quitting and building experiences based on real usage
- Expanding the calm, shame-free approach to more areas of personal progress
HabitLuma is just getting started. The goal remains the same: help people build streaks that actually stick.
