Inspiration
In our years of experience working in the field of software development, we have come to concur with what Aristotle believed that "We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit". We experience on daily basis that it is easy to set up a perfect process for our project, but it is arduous task to make team members to follow the process as a part of their habit.
What it does
With HabitStrong, we aim to encourage project team to follow processes by means of gamification of the whole process. Team members will gain points for following the process in completion of their tasks.
- Each code commits
- Pull request review & merge
- Jira task completion
- Writing confluence knowledge base articles
- Interacting with an author by adding comments on confluence page
Each team member will be able to play the game every day on their Jira project, and will be able to use the points they have earned to complete the game.
How we built it
We have built a gaming interface on top of the rich data layer provided by Atlassian, to enhance user experience to view the progress on the project as the progress on the game.
Challenges we ran into
- We wish that there was an universal API panel for all the APIs with confirmed data return formats across all the Atlassian applications, which currently has a uphill learning curve.
- Multiple app installations required to pull the data from different products
- Lack of universal API panel access / scope configuration (e.g. Google developer console)
- Confluence APIs doesn’t return the data consistently
- Bitbucket integration is totally different than the Jira/Confluence integration
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We believe that we can utilize people’s enthusiasm towards gaming into building good habits of following processes setup for execution of the projects, by means of merging both together. We can start these practices at team level and promote all the way to organization level, through all the different tools offered by Atlassian.
What we learned
We learnt how to develop an app and publish it on Jira/Confluence. Use this hackathon as an opportunity to build more apps and publish it on Atlassian marketplace. This will bring us into Atlassian ecosystem. We have been using the Atlassian products from quite some time however we never thought that we would take a path towards app marketplace.
Conceptualising the game is challenge. Mixing it with existing product is more challenging. Building it on top of a platform which you never worked on is most complex thing. We are fortunate to learn all of these and deliver it within short period of time.
What's next for HabitStrong
Integration with DevOps pipeline Saving the leaderboard in database Negative pointing system to punish defects / deadline miss Introducing levels in the game Multiplayer functionality
