Inspiration

While trying to come up with an idea, I was also thinking about an assignment for my APPH class, where we emphasize the importance of one's own well-being. Wellness involves many aspects, which is why the Wellness Empowerment Center, here at Georgia Tech, approaches wellness holistically through eight dimensions: spiritual, occupational, intellectual, social, environmental, physical, financial, and emotional. This idea sprouted when my thoughts for both challenges clashed.

What it does

Habit Jacket takes a fun approach to the eight dimensions of wellness. The app features a fun game where you can walk around campus and explore different parts of the city to, ultimately, unlock new maps/levels and capture creatures. Creatures are located all around campus, and you are encouraged to walk, run, or bike, to their location as a form of physical activity. When you capture creatures, you earn coins that allow you to unlock special maps or can be used to buy new costumes for you character, which you can customize in the app. Costumes are fun outfits for your character and can, sometimes be limited edition, like the Buzz outfit. Coins can also be earned when you track your mood, set a timer for your study time or physical activity. Unlike other apps, you are not penalized for "not studying enough." The app, however, encourages you to eat mindfully and deducts coins when you turn your phone facing up after setting a timer to "mindfully eat." Furthermore, the app has places where you can track how much you spend, how much you exercise, how you study, how you feel and many more.

What's next for Habit Jacket

The hope for Habit Jacket is to partner with other organizations, here on campus, like the Wellness Empowerment Center, to provide incentives for the app like prizes for those who rank high in the app. (Ranks are based on amount of coins, maps unlocked, form of activity and can be tracked based on major and year.)
