Inspiration

  • Wanted to build something that would stand out — not another generic habit checklist or tracker
  • Frustrated by typical streak apps that punish a missed day by breaking the whole streak, killing motivation instead of building it

What it does

  • Turns each completed habit into a glowing star
  • Stars connect into a personal constellation that grows over time
  • A missed day just dims a star instead of breaking a streak — no guilt UI
  • AI periodically reads check-in patterns and returns a short, warm, non-clinical insight plus one gentle suggestion
  • Lets you share a snapshot of your constellation

How we built it

  • Frontend: React + Vite, Tailwind CSS, React Three Fiber / drei (Three.js) for the live 3D constellation canvas, Framer Motion for micro-interactions
  • Backend: Node.js + Express, Prisma + PostgreSQL, JWT auth
  • AI: Anthropic Claude API for the insight-generation feature — [fill in: which Claude model + free or paid API tier]
  • Built with Antigravity (AI coding agent) from a system architecture spec planned out first — [fill in: which underlying model + free or paid tier]
  • Deployed as a single Render web service

Challenges we ran into

Not everything was smooth sailing — here's what we had to work through:

  • Getting the 3D constellation canvas to animate smoothly was the biggest challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Getting the live 3D constellation actually working, solo, under hackathon time pressure — pulling off smooth React Three Fiber animation alone in a tight window is a real technical win

What we learned

  • Time management under a hard deadline, working solo — with no teammates to split frontend, backend, design, and writing across, every hour had to be prioritized carefully

What's next for Habit Constellation

  • A social feature — letting users compare constellations with friends, seeing each other's skies side by side, with light encouragement rather than competitive pressure, staying consistent with the app's no-guilt philosophy
