Describe the problem your solution addresses?

The world was caught off guard as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked its havoc across countries. Being prisoners in our own homes, we hoped we’d be safe from coronavirus’ deadly symptoms. Unfortunately, many of us quarantining students--high school and college alike--were hit with a different set of negative symptoms: laziness and apathy towards school and life activities.

Staying committed to good study and life habits is key to not just surviving but thriving during this pandemic. Although we know that keeping up good habits during the pandemic is important, not all of us have the motivation to do so. With a new semester of school coming soon, if students aren’t able to re-establish good studying and life habits, succeeding during the school year with good grades and good work opportunities will be forever lost.

haBET is designed to create the needed motivation and incentives to best serve students during distance learning.

Why did you pick this solution and how does it address the problem?

Consider the nature of college students to understand why haBET is an excellent solution to coronavirus-induced apathy; we are highly social, we can become viciously competitive, we often support charity, and we are always up for snatching some extra pocket change. haBET was designed around such a nature. haBET can be played among friends, promoting a much-needed community. By adding a leaderboard to such groups, haBET provides incentives to competitively-driven students to keep good habits. Competing with friends, you can even win pocket change by out-habiting friends. Money is a powerful incentive, but if that incentive fails, users’ money becomes charity. We created haBET to effectively create incentives to maintain responsible habits.

Finding the motivation to go on morning runs, read more, or study Spanish vocabulary improves productivity and ensures that students succeed during distance learning. haBET provides students with friendly, fun accountability as they strive to succeed amidst a pandemic.
