Inspiration

With the large number of individuals and families battling everyday to make ends meet to put food on their table every day we were inspired by local soup kitchens, food banks and charities that are being done to help these people, however we saw that the accessibility of knowing where these events would be are not easily found. We decided that by creating a mobile application that provides all the information these people would need in order to have access to these events and be informed would make hunger around the country much less.

What it does

Haarvest is a mobile application that provides information on nearby food banks/pantries in your area with dates when these are open. You are able to see an overview of what are the available food that will be given out and full information from contact information to the address of the event and manage the events you would like to attend using the Calendar tab of the application. There is also an in-app live map that shows all the location of these food banks/pantries auto-locating your location through your mobile and displays nearby events. This application is not only design for those in need but also for those would want to give back by volunteering to distribute goods, donating money to fund the pantries or restaurants and companies who would like to partner with us and help out.

How we built it

We started the project by voting on the ideas of what we will be working on and who is our target audience. After having a goal, we started to conduct user research and analyzed the pain points for our target users. We then started to brainstorming ideas for the design, and also created mood board for inspiration. Then worked on the sketches, wireframe and finally the high fi prototype.

Challenges we ran into

Working with the designers in the team for the first time creates a lot of challenges. Overcoming the time differences by distributing specific tasks to each and everyone, and also communicating with each other when there were differences in the opinion and the design of the app. Gladly, everything worked out fine while we still learned many soft and hard skills from each other.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Given the 48-hr time constraint, we're proud that we were able to follow design methodologies, going through each of the steps from empathy all the way to prototyping. We love how the app turned out aesthetically, specifically our logo, colour scheme, and design layout. The overall UI of the app is very cohesive and easy to understand, letting users have a satisfactory experience.

What we learned

We learned what it's like to work in a collaborative, team-environment in a short amount of time. Communication with each other was extremely crucial as we needed to always be on the same page, knowing each other's responsibilities. We also learned a lot about food accessibility and insecurity through our primary and secondary research, giving us insight into potential solutions to real-world problems.

What's next for Harrvest

In terms of our next immediate actions, we believe that we could keep adding more pages/frames and expanding the app as a whole. Since we tackled real world issues and this is an app that could be easily implemented, we think it's plausible to actually partner with food banks, food pantries, and businesses to make this work successfully.
